Removal of Ammoniacal Nitrogen from Fish Processing Wastewater Using Bioaugmentation Technique

چکیده
Fish are a rich source of proteins beneficial to heart and eyes. Being perishable, they are processed immediately after collection. Water consumption in fish-processing industry is very large and high strength wastewaters rich in salts, ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), organic load are generated which cannot be discharged without any treatment. The present investigation describes development of bioaugmentation process to reduce the concentration of NH3-N upto the drinking water level from the wastewater arising from an Up flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor. Culture of Bacillus sp. was efficient in lowering the NH3-N content of the wastewater from initial 370 mg/L up to 4 mg/L within 5 days of incubation at ambient temperature (28±2 oC). At bench scale level, the culture reduced the NH3-N content upto 60 mg/L from initial 558 mg/L. Thus, Bacillus sp. can be used successfully for developing a bioaugmentation process for removing NH3-N from wastewater generated in fish processing industry.

Municipal wastewater treatment by the bioaugmentation of Bacillus sp. K5 within a sequencing batch reactor
Artificial municipal wastewater was treated successfully by the bioaugmentation of Bacillus sp. K5 capable of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) within a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). During the long-term operation, the bioaugmentation system exhibited an excellent and steady COD and NH4+-N removal without nitrite and nitrate accumulation. The average removal efficiency for ...

An aquaculture system can be a potentially significant source of antibacterial compounds and ammonia in an aquatic environment. In this study, the removal of total ammonia nitrogen and florfenicol antibiotic from synthetic aqueous wastewater was assessed by applying a commercial TFC (thin film composite) polyamide nanofilter. The effects of pH (6.5-8.5), pressure (4-10 bar), concentration of to...

Background: The conventional activated sludge processes are not able to completely treat the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds of meat processing wastewaters. Microalgal biofilm, which has the advantages of easiness and inexpensiveness, can be applied as a post-treatment method. Methods: The optimal levels of micronutrients and N/P ratio were aimed in the cultivation of Scenedesmus quadricauda...
متن کاملBioaugmentation as a tool to protect the structure and function of an activated-sludge microbial community against a 3-chloroaniline shock load.
Bioaugmentation of bioreactors focuses on the removal of xenobiotics, with little attention typically paid to the recovery of disrupted reactor functions such as ammonium-nitrogen removal. Chloroanilines are widely used in industry as a precursor to a variety of products and are occasionally released into wastewater streams. This work evaluated the effects on activated-sludge reactor functions ...
متن کاملNitrification at full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants: Evaluation of inhibition and bioaugmentation of nitrifiers.
Batch nitrification tests were conducted with sludge and wastewater streams obtained from field implementations to evaluate nitrification inhibition and efficiency of a nitrifiers bioaugmentation technology at full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The results showed that the substrate organic carbon and pH of wastewater streams were inhibitory factors to nitrification and th...
